The past 12 months has seen a range of community involved tourism projects established in regions such as Shan State, Kayah State, Magway Division, Indawgyi (Kachin State) and Chin State. The Yangon region is yet however to see the introduction of a systematic community based tourism project, which is an area of focus outlined in the Myanmar government’s recently introduced 100 day plan in tourism sector.
One area we would like to put forward as a case for consideration is the village of Kyaikthale in Twante Township. Our CBT accommodation providers having worked closely with the community of this village since the Cyclone Nargis disaster in 2008, we can confidentially say that the operation of a community based tourism project in this region would lead to major educational benefits, infrastructure improvements, diversification of business practice and the creation of new jobs. Key members of the community have also come forward to express their willingness to help out with the project, as long as it is responsibly managed, set-up and controlled.
On the back of a visit to the proposed project with established local tour operators and the Minister of Yangon’s State Division Hotels & Tourism Affairs Ministry, we would like to suggest that the following plan is put forward and considered as part of the government’s drive to develop and promote community based tourism projects in Myanmar.
